Grouse, Quail & Allies

Grouse are game birds, heavily built like chickens. This group also includes the Ring-necked Pheasant and Wild Turkey.

The ruffed grouse is one of 18 species of grouse. It has several common names including partridge, woods pheasant and ruffled grouse. 

Did you know ??

During cold winter months, Ruffed grouse often burrow themselves into the snow, behavior known as snow-roosting. This helps the birds to be less visible to predators and protects them from wind and from cold.
