These ,mostly of gray, brown, or white, warblers are usually birds of dense, shrubby habitats, but some also occur in more forested habitats. Most species in this family occur in Asia, and to a lesser extent in Africa. A few range into Europe.

Some species, like the Eurasian Blackcap, possess the ability to alter their migratory patterns rapidly. Some populations are long-distance migrants (flying to Africa), some are short-distance, and some are non-migratory residents, all within the same species.
